The quickest way to stop things falling out of caravan cupboards is to put a barrier across the front of each shelf, pack heavy items low, and stop things sliding with non-slip liner. Here's how to do each one, plus a few extra tricks.
Why things fall out in the first place
Every bump and corrugation moves your cupboard contents forward. By the time you stop, everything is leaning on the door. Open it and it all comes out at once.

Put a rod across the front of the cupboard An adjustable cupboard rod sits across the front of the shelf and acts like a barrier. Items can shift, but they can't fall out. Our Rod fits 40–70cm cupboards with no drilling, and Rod Mini suits small bathroom and spice cupboards.

2. Pack heavy items low and at the back Tins, jars and plates go on the lowest shelf, pushed to the back. Light things like chip packets go up top. Heavy items up high are the ones that do damage.
3. Line shelves with non-slip matting Rubber shelf liner stops plates and containers sliding. Cut it to size and it's cheap and easy to replace.
4. Fill the gaps Empty space lets things build up speed. Wedge tea towels, a soft bag or a folded towel into gaps so items can't move.
5. Use a shelf to create two levels Tall cupboards with one stack of items are the most likely to topple. An expandable shelf like Shelley splits the height in two, so stacks stay short and stable.
6. Swap glass for unbreakable containers Decant sauces, coffee and spices into plastic or stainless containers. If something does fall, it won't smash. Check out Mason the Jar for spice/ flour containers.
7. Check your cupboard catches Push-button catches wear out and can pop open on rough roads. Check them before a big trip and replace any that feel loose.
Bonus: the fridge Fridge doors have the same problem. A rod across a fridge shelf stops bottles and containers sliding forward while you drive.
Before you drive: quick checklist
- Heavy items low and at the back
- Rods in place across each shelf
- Gaps filled
- Catches clicked shut
- Open cupboards slowly when you arrive
FAQ
What stops things falling out of caravan cupboards? A barrier across the front of the shelf, such as an adjustable cupboard rod, works best. Combine it with non-slip liner and packing heavy items low.
How do you secure caravan cupboards without drilling? Use a tension-style cupboard rod, non-slip matting and an expandable shelf. None of these need screws or holes.
