The Unwritten Rules of the Caravan Park
Every caravan park has its posted rules on the board at reception. Then there are the other ones.
The ones everybody follows and nobody says out loud. Break one and the whole row will know about it by breakfast. Here’s our list.
-
Never cut through someone’s site.
Their site is their front yard for the week. Walk around it, even if it adds a minute. Even if they’re not home. Especially if they’re not home.
-
Happy hour starts when the first chair comes out.
There’s no official time. Someone sits down with a drink at about 4:30 and the row follows. If you’re invited over, bring your own chair, your own drink and your own cup. Rita has never once been late. Meet Rita
-
Wave.
On the road, in the park and at the dump point. It costs nothing, and half your best camping friends started with a wave.
-
Don’t watch someone reverse in.
You can offer to help, or you can go and be busy somewhere else. Standing there with a coffee watching is not an option. Nobody parks well with an audience.
-
Quiet hours are quiet hours.
Check the times at reception. Generators go off and music goes down when they say so, even if you’re having a great night.
-
Don’t hog the hot water at 7am.
Everyone wants a shower before the day starts. Keep it short in the morning rush and save the long one for the afternoon.
-
Point your lights at your own van.
Fairy lights are lovely. A floodlight shining into the neighbour’s bedroom window isn’t.
-
Slow down for kids on bikes.
They won’t slow down for you.
-
The camp kitchen is shared.
Wash up, wipe down and don’t leave your pan “soaking” overnight.
-
Leave your site better than you found it.
Pick up your rubbish, fill in any holes and do one last lap for the tent peg you always leave behind.
Got a rule we missed? Tell us in the TE Community Facebook group. We’ll add the best ones to the list.

Rita is the insulated cocktail cup that keeps happy hour cold long after the sun’s gone off the awning. Maggie holds your coffee at 7am and shakes your cocktail at 4:30. Bring both and you’re the best-prepared site on the row.
